Illegal Fish...

Yes, the federal laws state that should you catch an invasive species that is banned in the US, it must be immediately destroyed. It is illegal to retain an invasive species alive unless you have a valid collecting permit. And, those permits are hard to obtain without institutional backing.
Now, if a fish is illegal within a particular state you're fishing in but, is legal in the state you're transporting it to, a permit to collect that species is obtainable.

Thanks, Oddball. You are the encyclopedia of everything fish.
The reason why i am asking is, Lake Wilson on Oahu, HI. is only 5 minutes from my house. Everytime I have gone fishing I have seen a snakehead.
I did a google search and learned they used to raise them in Waialua as a food fish.

Welp, today was the day I hooked up with one on light tackle. He was about 20" or so. The fight was so-so, the fish was very skinny for his size. I ended up letting him go. I just wanted to know if it would be legal to take one home.

by dogfish he means bowfin, they are very fun to catch ;)

same as Aus too, I would guess it's the same for most contries with illeagle fish species...

if you catch carp (euro) you have to kill it on the spot, if you get caught releasing it, it's a WHOPPING GREAT fine!

if i caught a snakehead, i couldnt kill it, id let it go, i cant kill an animal, regardless of what the law says.

Too bad that fish you let go will go onto destroying other native fish and the surrounding ecosystem :(

You will be doing more harm by letting it live.
