How do I keep my new fishies from getting sucked up into the filter? I have them in a 120g with 2 overflow boxes. Is this a common problem or will they be ok and know better then to get too close? My Cuban babies just started swimming today! There are about 100 to 150 and they are so friggin cute! What do I feed them? I was thinkin crushed up flake food?

usually they are okay but what I do is take foam and put it on the intake that slows the current down and you wont have to worry about your babies..

Congrats!

I would put sponge pre-filter on there.. like one from a submersible pump... also go to the LFS and buy some frozen baby brine.. feed that the the fry.. they'll be ok..

Congrats on the new tank. Most of the time fish will not get sucked up. BUt if you need to add a sponge filter or a slower powered filter.

If you wanted to, you could add a Hydro 5 sponge filter for the fvry to snack on. I dont think that newborn fry would swim all the way to the top and into the overflow untill they at least gain some confidance and benture out into the tank without mom or pop.

I have a 125g with Trimac and this 120g linked together by a common sump so I'll steal a sponge from that tank. I didn't know that was even an option. I guess they are small enough to eat the tiny food particles in the filter.

I was thinking more along the lines of some kind of screen to cover the intakes. Won't foam clog up like a filter and raise my tank water height? I don't want that.

I personally wouldnt worry about fry getting sucked up, but if you are, you can cut a circle out of thin fabric (i used a threadbare sock :P ) and let the suction hold it in place.
