Hey,

So a women in my area is getting rid of her snowflake eel with a 65 gal aquarium that it's currently in.

I believe it's the only inhabitant in the tank, and she claims the tank is well established and he is eating like a pig.

I'm fresh to salt water, and would like to know if this sort of set up is a good starting point or would that eel need a new home asap *uupgradeee*???

Thanks,
Kat

I could always upgrade?I have larger tanks, but they are all set up as fresh water...

Would this tank only be able to support the eel, or could I eventually..Once I feel more comfortable put a couple other fish in there?

I'm not sure on the dimensions, I'm waiting on her reply.

It's prob 48 inches long.... If its already setup and its eating then that's a good start. You can house other fish in the tank just no coral. I've seen people put triggers, puffers, and lionfish with eels.

I have a porcupine puffer niger trigger yellow tang freshwater lionfish volitan llionfish dragon wrasse and v tail grouper in mine. Eels can hold their own. MY grouper tried to pick on my eel and needless to say he never tried again.

Yeah..no corals..I think I'll try a fish only tank as my first salt water .
I don't want to over stock the tank, and by the looks of it some more live rock would make the tank look a lot better.

Any begginner friendly fish I should start researching that would be suitable to live with this eel ??

Thanks a bunch,
I really appreciate the experienced answers:)

The person selling this set up is filtering it with a Koralia jet and letting the rock do it's part.
They were running ana AquaClear when they ahd other fish in it to help with the extra mess, but they haven't bought anyother one since they sold off that stock about 6 months ago.
They just do water changes every now and again..

Can someone PLEASE tell me what type of filtration I should be doing putting on this tank.

Protien skimmer ect??

Thanks..

As far as my knowledge goes, protien skimmers are essential for a salt tank. Can you keep a salt tank without one? Yes, but PS's will help keep everything in check and makes the tank easier to maintain.

I just wouldn't recommend keeping an over the back filter on it. They're ok for smaller tanks, but aren't really any use in bigger aquariums. I'm running a canister filter on my 55 (a Fluval 305) and it does its part. You can always go with a sump or wet/dry, but unless the aquarium already has an overflow built in, you'll need to purchase an overflow box and some aquarium pumps.

It's all just preference. Like I said I run a Fluval 305 with the mechanical then have an over the back filter running on the side with nothing but rubble of live rock in it. Await some other responses, though. More knowledge is always better and you'll get the general concensus of what everyone's opinion is.

Yeah it def doesn't have an overflow built in.. i'd have to buy an overflow box..so would a 40 gal tank be sufficient for a sump? i use canister filters on all of my fw tanks..i've never built my own sump before..and all the research i've been doing makes me nervous haha. Is there a thread on here, or sticky for that matter on building a sump for a marine tank?

The main concern is if the snowflake eel will survive in the tank as it is now, if i took it him and went through the process of putting all this stuff together.

if its fish only you can buy a wt/dry or buy a prebuilt sump... i'm gonna get the Aqueon model 3 for my 90g
