First time poster, long time lurker... Anyways I've been keeping fish for roughly 3 or so years and was first attracted African Cichlids. Started with a 29 gallon, then a 46, now a 90 with an all male hap/peacock mix. I also Recently ventured into a nano reef...

Anyways... I'm looking into giving it all up to go /v\onster!!! Cichla's, Dats, Arrows, you name it I want it, haha. So here is my question... I would like to use my 90 gallon to start a community of Cichla, maybe Dats and maybe an Arrow. Definitely Cichla tho, probably a slower growing sp. What would you all do in this situation? Start with just Cichla and wait for a tank upgrade to add the others? Start with everyone together so they can grow up and get along?

Additional info... I currently live in an upstairs apt. and will be getting a new place in roughly 8 months. I can't bring a bigger tank up my steps and really don't have the room for anything bigger than my current 90. I am very serious in housing these fish for awhile. I am looking to have a tank between 300-400 gallons once I move...

If I forgot anything let me know, don't be too harsh with me, lol

Good Job asking first...:D

I would recommend some orinos first, or some ocells. Check with snookn21 here, because he has some nice bass, and arowanas. You should be able to keep 4 bass and 1 arowana just to start out, then add more as time goes. Make sure that all of the fish are almost equal sizes. I have an 80, and 10 cichla lived in peace for 6 months.

Good Luck, and keep us updated, and if you need anymore help, just let us know...;)

hahah same here but since i am a kid i cant get awesome 300-400 tanks haha lol but i can get my monster fish tank which is a sixty haha not really a monster but is to me im going to keep hopefully one oscar datnoid and the ocella and make it a predatory:naughty: :grinyes:
and thats it until i turn eighteen and move out and then i will get a MONSTER tank haha thanks for the thread it helps

Thanks for the help master... I really wish I could get the tank now but I just don't have the room... I'm thinking of starting out with more than 4, maybe 6 or so and once there older and I go to transfer then in the new tank I can weed out the "non-stunners". Orinos are nice ocells are nice... Heck there all nice. I really like the look of monos, do they tend to be larger, faster growing than the two you listed?

Other stuff... I want a very clean look to my tank, thinking bare bottom but have never done this before... Would also like to get a nice driftwood center piece. IDK... I'm so used to having aragonite for substrate and reef rock to raise the PH for my Africans... I'll be posting more stuff as I think of it...

STX... Great seeing a young hobbiest... Go away to college first, have a blast but work hard... Then you can really enjoy this ridiculously expensive hobby. I like where you're starting though... I always had a love for these /V\onster fish but always parted with something easier/cheaper...

Monos are fine to keep as well. 6 is a good number, and they can last for a while. A higher number is fine...who wants to guess how many amazonian fish I have in my 80...lol good luck.

ya thanks for the encouragement i am planning to be an engineer or an architect even lol i also want to get my kids into this hobby and tell them about my experiance hahahaha

architect
i think you have 100  haha naaa maybe 20??

Wow, you guys are great... I've been a member of numerous forums before and I have never received this kind of positive reinforcement....

As I said before I am working up to a 400ish aquarium and I will be growing out these guys in my 90... Right now I'm planning on 1 Silver Arow, 6 Cichlas (still debating sp.). I mentioned that I'm interested in Dats... Maybe some Medium/Large catfish... Not a RTC or anything giant. Suggestions for additional stock to the 6 Cichla and 1 Arrow?

WOW...22? Post a pic! lol
