I can't seem to decide what I want to do with my aquascaping. I just left petco and found a nice piece of driftwood for my RBP tank. Its larger than all my other pieces and I plan to take out 3 of the smaller pieces of wood to make room for this bigger one. I WANT to keep the tannins because I know my piranha would like them and I like the look. How do I clean without removing too much of the tannins from the wood? I know it will eventually all seep out but want to enjoy it while I can. On the other hand, I am kinda skeptical about adding the piece to my tank. I just recently went from a 55 gal to a 75 and kind of feel like it defeats the purpose if I just crowd my fish out with decorations. I know theres a way I can make this work... I just might have to remove more that I originally anticipated. How do you all feel? Here's some pics.

If you like tannins, use mopani wood. Give it a rinse and it'll remain submerged, no problem. It's available at PETCO where you shopped recently. Good luck and enjoy!

Thanks Fuego. The piece I purchased is actually Mopani. I think it will look good in my setup as soon as I figure out what I will get rid of to make room for it. Whatever I take out, I'm sure will end up back in there at some point in time... I'm always changing my tank in some way. Does anybody else change their aquascaping often?

Definitely boil it first to kill off the white fuzz fungus. Its harmless to the fish, but you wont appreciate it messing with your nice clean tank for a month. Hot water & scrubbing alone wont do the job. You have to boil it to kill the fungus.

Is that Mopani? I can tell from the pic... If it is, then you will get plenty of tannin no matter how long you boil it. I'm glad you like the tannins, too. Mopani tannins give a great goldish red color to the water & Im sure your boys will love it.

I think theres plenty of room for that piece without pulling out any others. Besides, nobody says you have to lay it flat. You can just prop it up on other wood/rocks or stand it up against the glass so it takes up less floorspace.

Nice tank and driftwood. I have a piece very similar. I found a new lfs last night that has probably 100 pieces that are already mounted to slate for $9-$45 depending on size and shape.

What substrate is that? I'm pickup up some black colorquartz next week.

i love mopani driftwood-i have 6 large pieces and i didnt soak or boil them-i bought them thru a seller on ebay that oven bakes them.

i love the look of your tank! i think i would add that driftwood piece, then what about adding some tall plants along that back wall in a few spots? would some jungle val work with your stock?
