Twin cities
It's days like this I am extremely grateful for what I have (I can't even imagine being homeless right now, though I'm pretty sure all of the local churches are making sure people don't need to be outside), but extremely jealous of those that live in warm weather areas / have a nicer house.

My house is great, on a great piece of property, updated kitchen, but the insulation is kinda crappy and it has forced water heat without that much surface area of radiator. Normally it's not a big deal, but today everything is running full blast and my house is reading 48 degrees. I guess something about being -26 outside and the coldest air in a generation is a little too extreme for my house. At least it's only a day or two, as long as my pipes don't freeze I can just wear a jacket.

Side note, the warmest place in my house is right next to the fish tank! Mostly because it is on the underground side of the basement with no windows nearby AND it has a radiator near it, but having a lot of surface at 82F certainly can't hurt. Guess I know where I'll be....

Sorry to hear of you cold problems. We are discussing it over in off topic.

Even though I live in what is suppose to be 'warmer areas'. I've been hit with some of that cold too(not as bad as you), however it will warm for me in a few days.

Hey neighbor *waves* I’m just west of the cities.
-31 was the lowest temp here before it started climbing again. And I can totally relate to the house not being up to par insulation wise. Though you do have it a bit worse then me.
I’m afraid to check my lp tank. It was just filled full this month, but has been running nonstop and still unable to heat the house up to temp. Ugh. We all just have to hang in there for a day or two. Lol

It's -2F right now here but with the wind chill it's around -23F so I can't compare to either of you. At least the sun is shining!! No plans to go outside if I can help it.

We had the house insulated 20 years ago with spray urethane foam in both the wood framing and the exposed block foundation (walk out basement) and it wasn't cheap but made a huge difference in heating and cooling the house. We also added additional fiberglass in the attic ourselves and it also helped but was a nasty job. New windows at the same time also helped.

I checked the propane tank yesterday and it's about 50% full so we are good for awhile. Forced hot air furnace is under 5 years old and doesn't seem to be having any issues right now keeping up.

If it helps any we're having record high temperatures here. Local weather station says day before yesterday was the hottest it had ever recorded, 94°F, average highs this time of year are high 70s.

My tank has been getting up to about 89°F in the evenings, supposed to be 78°F.

It's cold here too. But it's cold for NC. I can't imagine living in the kind of cold some of you do. If it gets to 25 deg outside, people lose their minds! God forbid a flake of snow should fall somewhere in a 5 county area. Schools close. Grocery stores sell out of milk, bread and water. It's the Apocalypse! God I love it here...

It's snow or threat of ice that usually does it. It's just that we don't have to deal with it very often. No infrastructure in place to deal with it. They have trucks with salt solution that treat the roads before freezing rain. But if that doesn't work, tough. Buck up and take some time to do some housework. You're not going anywhere...
