When i was at my local aquarium underwater world (not a store a zoo kind of) I was looking in huge tank at least 3 metres high and 6 metres long but it was kind ofround and inside a wall and you could look down on it. anyway there was a red tailed cat in there probably about 2metres long 1 and a half foot high and one and a half feet wide in there. there were about nine or so large Pacu, large catfish of some description and heaps and heaps of large adult red devils which were all breeding (seriously must of been about 30 or so!) as well as two Very large Jaguar cichlids, two giant gouramis and three fully grown silver monos. Since then ive wanted a red tailed cat . but is it impractical to keep one because they get so large, will the one i saw get any bigger, and dont they eat other large fish (like red devils)

I live about 1 hour from UnderWater World and that RTC is roughly 4ft or so. The tank makes the cat look much bigger when it is at the rear.

What I dont get is that all the Red Devils keep in the middle and there is also thousands of miniscule fish on the outskirts. Was there any Iridescent sharks present?

If you took pics, post them up!

I'm sure they DO eat some of the smaller fish, but they are probably well fed, and dont need to go into hunting mode to eat. Trust me.....If they stopped feeding the cats for a couple days the fish population would start to shrink :D

:iagree:the lfs near my house lost an 8" oscar to a RTC just because he left the fish hungry for a day

haha yeah, they make sure they dont miss a meal
To feed them, they drop in bucket loads of vege's, shrimp and pellets. Its not that fun to watch which is suprising.

Veggies shrimp and pellets mmust be really boring for the fish

That's why I feed my 3"+ hybrid small animals! JK, but seriously they will eat whatever, but at least once every couple of months I try to quarantine some large feeders for my hybrid. I think of it as enrichment like they do for zoo animals. He gets to actually hunt. He chases them around instead of just sitting there like a log. He loves live fish, but it's to impractical to feed to him all the time.
