I'm wondering is there anything a single male convict can coexist with in a 55 gallon? A female convict is out of the question, I do not want all those fry, and selling them/feeding them to another fish/disposing of them isn't in question either lol. I've heard of them being kept with raphael cats, but I've also heard of them plucking out their eyes. I've heard of jack dempseys, green terrors, and firemouths hanging out with them ok sometimes, then there are the stories of them getting their asses whooped. So, have you guys ever had success keeping a single convict in a large tank with at least one other fish? I'd love to hear about it lol. If not, I guess he'll get his own tank.

Lets see right now my full grown male convict is with 2 big redhead cichlids, a 8 inch red devil, 7 inch jd, 9 inch venny pike. My female convict is in a 46 gallon with a red wolf fish, jag, and a jade goby

It depends on the fishes individual personality (and yes they DO have them).. I'd go for a Dempsey, personally...and make sure they're about the same size, or that the Dempsey is a tiny bit smaller...

It all depends on your particular fish but yes, there are many fish that can and have been kept with a male con in a 55. Some choices would be firemouths, JD, salvini, another con, GT (for awhile at least), etc.

Now it's very possible that your fish is just extremely aggressive and doesn't want tank mates, in which case none of these may work, but it has been done.

firemouths, JD, salvini and oscars... all have the same temperment... size would be the only thing you wanna watch out for with the oscar cuz he will eat your con if it is to small

If you dont want a pair then id try a male Neet or HRP or another male con, salvini, possibly a JD, firemouths and any other small growing cichlid that doesnt get over about 8 or so inches. You could also try a Pictus cat, rafael cat, some cool plecos, corys or smaller growing loaches.

DEFINITELY NOT an oscar or oscars...

id go salvini personally, Cons can be aggressive as adults, but the main thing to remember is when buying another cichlid to go with your con, that new guy if bought
around the same size of your con will in no way be as aggressive, any other cichlid
at that size is still very young, compared to your adult/semi adult con,
My male Jd is pretty big for a 55 hes around 10 inches though that has taken over two years to get this big.

Hmm, I see. I actually tried putting a female in the tank with him once before (tank is a grow out 10 gallon, so its not huge - he is about 2'', she was like 2 or 3 times bigger than him) and he made her life a living hell til I took her back to the store. Maybe he'll be alone his whole life... only one way to find out though! I really wanted to try a JD with him though. But it'll be in the future... and I can't guarantee he'll be so small by then. Will it also mean he will be used to living alone and having the run of the place, even if it is a new tank?

oscars and many of the other suggestions on this thread would be too big for a 55

i think a salvini, along with a sajica, a pictus cat, and an apple snail would make for a nice tank :)
