I have hair algae in my CRS tank. I have a pretty big problem with it that came outta nowhere in the past few days. the tank is planted with plenty of java moss and a couple really long swords. I really don't want to scrap all the plants since it took forever for the moss to growout. the CRS are too delicate and expensive to add any fish to the tank, and they are sensitive to any chemical treatments (plus i don't like the algaecide products in ANY tanks). What can i do to get rid of this without killing my shrimp or starting over?

what type of hair algae is it? is it cladophora/blanket weed? if so, squirting it with hydrogen peroxide will quickly kill it, but it will return if conditions arent right. you need to treat the underlying problem to solve the algae issue

Have you checked phosphate content?

I had the same issue a few months ago. I ended up soaking the plants in a bleach/water solution for a minute or two, then rinsing in tap or RO. The algae turned very light in color and then disappeared.

i haven't had issues with algae in this tank since i cycled it. i since have greatly reduced light and the tank has been set up for about 6 months now. it is only getting about 7 hours of light a day. I don't have a phosphate test kit, however i did add some phosguard to the hob to try to prevent further problems with it. My numbers of CRS have dwindled and I want to keep it a species tank. I just haven't had the money to get more CRS.
