Anyone around Illinois have any of those gars for sale? I want one so bad!!

what setup is it intended for, you will have more luck getting help if you show you know what ur getting into and can house a fish of that size....

you would have better luck under the buy/sell forum. i would also suggest doing a lot of research before getting either of these species. they both get quite large. if you are new to gar i would suggest maybe getting a florida/spotted.

Well i had a Florida Gar on my 210g fish tank so i know all the basic of how to take care of true gar. Now im looking to buy a alligator gar or Long nose gar. Their hard to get though.

you do know a gator gar will outgrow that tank fairly quickly right? a longnose may be a better choice, but would likely outgrow the tank as well and they can be a little more tricky to care for. have you considered a tropical gar? they are a little more pricey, but much more rare than the gator or longnose and are very stable in an aquarium (i think mike at H2O has a few 12"ers in stock). also their look resembles that of the gator gar. just a thought.

Will second this... See about getting one of the smaller Tropicus Mike has (if he still has them..I may buy them this week so jump or lose) rather than a gator or Longnosed. They cost more but are going to be much better for you in the long run.

Gators and longnosed really kind of suck as far as hobby Aquarium fish go..They are touchy ,temperamental and just plain bad aquarium fish. It really is better to just avoid them unless you really want to dedicate yourself and allocate space to a specific fish and that fish only. Even then they will test you in every way. Gators in particular are a very testing animal. They are a total PITA to keep with any success under normal aquaria conditions.

Tropicals are damn easy to work with, they will do great in a 210 and you will have few issues with them. They carry none of the bad habits and problems that come with any of the other Atractosteus or Lepisosteus gar species.. (Minus Florida /spotted).

not to mention the sheer beauty of the tropicals! A. Tropicus was gods gift to gar keepers! :) they have beauty, they are easy to care for, and they stay at a relatively managable size. if richard (polypterus) doesnt hog all of them i would strongly recommend getting one!
