I think you need to decide what materials you are more comfortable working with, plywood or concrete. Then start searching the DIY forum, there are tons of tanks that people have shown step by step on what they successfully built.
and ponds would probably be easier because of the no glass/acrylic factor but less pleasant to view from across the room. It all depends on what you want...

Best thing to do is search the DIY's & read all the you can. Then ask questions that may arise. It's all been done here somewhere
