Hi! I' Lisa and I'm new to this forum. I have kept fish most of my life, but they have only been goldfish and bettas. Could anyone suggest a good starter fish?

it depends on what you look for in a fish, and how big of a fish you can house
Try Red Parrots, to me they seem really cute, active and hardy. Their fun to watch! 
Not to mention they are a hybrid and are look like they want to be popped with a needle any minute...hehe....
Bettas are actually pretty pimp! I used to have a male and a couple of females in a 55gal wit some of my other community fish...very kewl fish. They look much better when they aren't cramped in a bowl.
Starter fish, you want passive, aggressive, carnivorous, or herbivourus?
I would give Severums, Convicts, Fire Mouths or Blue Acara a try...they are very hard cichldis and are full of great personalities! They'll get'cha hooked for sure!

As others have asked, what kind of fish and tank do you want? 55g single species agressive? 125g community? A few really active ones or some big mellow ones?
