I'm really paranoid that some freak disaster will happen and my pump line will break and flood my apartment with water everywhere. Is there some way I can install an electronic switch that detects the water level and shuts off the filter when the water level reaches below a certain point?

maybe something suctioned to the side of the tank that has a little float and when that float hits some switch at the bottom it cuts the electrical current to the filter?

Thanks!

If your intake inlet is near the top of the tank, you will only siphon out water above that level. I prefer to pull from the bottom of the tank, but if you're really concerned, you can modify your intake.

Level switches work well in conjuction will a solenoid or other electronic actuated valve. Make sure you have a "normally closed" valve or it won't do you much good during a power failure :)

for the two less expensive ones, any instructions on how to hook them up to the filter's electric cord? Or however you hook them up..

No, sorry buddy looked it up really quickly.. didn't even know they made that kinda stuff..
But, is there a specific reason why your freaking out about it... ? Something you heard, read ... ? How long have you been fishkeeping?

If your hose breaks, shutting your filter down won't necessarily help. Water will continue to siphon up the intake, over the top, and down the back (just like your gravel vac). You would have to install a valve somewhere in line above the level of your intake opening. The only way you can truly insure you don't flood your floor is to raise your siphon inlet. That is if your tank doesn't split down the seams or your heater explodes and takes out the entire side :nilly:

Look into sumps. The members that use them here have them all set up to insure there is no flooding during a power failure.
