I'm super, super stoked. I just put in an order for 6 juvenile "monte cristo" cichlids - Oscura heterospila. I have been waiting all YEAR for these to come in stock with my supplier. I honestly didn't really even know they existed before the beginning of this year, they are so uncommon. But noticed they were on my regular supplier's website as out of stock, so went to go look them up online and see what they were, and FELL IN LOVE. They instantly became a have to have fish for me. But he hasn't been able to get them in, and after 7 months I finally just gave up on them. But the supplier just sent me a message - he knows I've been waiting for them - to let me know he's getting a batch of 1" juveniles in today, finally! So just threw in my order. I am beyond excited about these fish and watching them mature. Had to share!! Not sure when he'll ship them yet, since they don't even arrive to him until later this afternoon, but I'll be putting pics of them up as soon as they arrive.

That's a nice looking cichlid.

Congrats! I've never heard of these things; they look like some kind of Vieja to my non-cichlidophile eyes? Are they aggressive?

I just noticed you're a fellow Canuck! Did you get them from Aquarists Across Canada? I just saw them listed as new there when I googled them for a look. :)

Been in chicago for years another newworld cichlid that’s tough to get rid of but haha a nice medium size mild manner Central American..

I remember, bags of 10 would come up at fish auctions in Chicago or Milwaukee and they'd go for $2 or $3 a bag there was such a glut.
They were once considered a species in the genus Vieja.

Yes, they used to be part of the Vieja complex. I'm having a hard time finding much about their temperament online, so I'm just going to assume they're like most of the Vieja/ex-Vieja group, of which I've kept many different species over the years.

I live in a very small town on the very west coast of Canada. GUPPIES are hard to get rid of here, seriously. It's not something I take into consideration when choosing what species to keep, otherwise my tanks would be empty :p CA/SA cichlids are always more difficult to get rid of than Africans anyway, but they're my preferred and I've been keeping them for 30+ years.

Yes, they're coming from Billy at Aquarists Across Canada.

Haha Duane we were prob at the same auction…as for heterospilus they are mild to very mild in temperament

That's what I've read from the little I've been able to find. I'm expecting them to be similar to the marbled fenestratus I had not long ago and be pretty "easy keepers" with some smaller tank mates. Ordered 6 to get a pair form out of the group, then will build my 8ft 135gal around that pair.
