I just got an 85 gallon hex. Its a beautiful tank but its shape makes it hard to decide what to stock. Ive considered cichlids and piranhas and all kinds of fish. I still can't decide. I kept a saltwater reef for a year and half before this and i don't want to go back into that because of the money. :/ so what would you all do?

I usually see hexagon tanks as a planted tank with Angels and other community fish.

What are the dimensions ? How tall etc ? Got pics it sounds cool!

No pics as of right now. Buts its over 2 feet wide and about 2 feet maybe a little more tall. It just sucks cause not having the length of rectangle tanks limits the livestock, but other than that its awesome. Paid 50 bucks for tank and stand. just needs to be cleaned and the stand painted black (just not a fan of the woodstain)

my personal fav for hexs is a mound of stones against 3 of the corners to give it the feel that you can only see half the mound and then throw in a bunch of tanganyikan rock dwellers. It'll be like a coral reef, without the coral.... so i guess just a reef. Get some really colorful ones like j transcriptus and your set. maybe some shell dwellers on the bottom and like a few open water fish to fill the empty space above, but the main attraction will be all the cichlids hiding in the holes, popping their heads out of their caves and breeding like crazy. =) sorry, i'm hoping for a hex tank someday so I can do this myself and I like to ramble on and on if you haven't noticed =p

Thats what i keep coming back to is african cichlids.
I guess i just wanted to see what else was out there. Anyone else have or seen really stunning hex/cubeish tanks that were not a saltwater reef tank?

well, you see, hexagonal tanks were made for species that don't require a lot of dissolved oxygen in there water. A hex tank is pretty much the equivalent of a tall tank in rectangular tanks and since the depth of the tank is much more, there will be much less dissolved oxygen towards the bottom of the tank, ruling out many pleco and catfish species and other low-level species. But that is where the beauty of Tanganyika fish shine. they originate from Lake Tanganyika, which has an all around low oxygen content where most of it's fish are from, so you wont need to worry about having to buy another strong air pump and air stone that sits on the bottom of the tank to digress from the beauty of the layout. just my 2c
