Did you read the stickies yet?
I keep mine in the low to mid 80's.
Lots of directional current. I use 2 powerheads, a canister filter and the outputs from the sump.
Lots of o2. I like to use the venturies on the powerheads. Sumps are great for oxygenation, too.
Keep nitrates low.
There has been some debate as to whether live food is better or not, but I like to get mine off of live as soon as possible.
Definitely quarantine. They are wild caught, and most come with parasites. The high temps help with ich on newly acquired payara.
Don't keep them with much bigger, much smaller, or overly aggressive fish.
Make sure your tank is adequately sized. They are very skittish and can easily damage themselves on sharp decor and tank walls.
I have found that they are best kept in groups of three, solo is second best, pairs constantly fight for dominance. If it is kept solo, he will probably claim a territory, so make sure there is room for the rest of the tankmates outside of the territory.
Any other questions, just ask.
