im thinking of creating a tropical pond later...

It depends on a variety of factors such as shade, depth, surface area, and exposure. The max temp for one persons pond can be very different from another. If you can provide shade for it, it will be easy to keep it in the 80's. If it has no opportunity for shade, plan on building it as deep as possible. Maximizing the surface area will maximize evaporation (cooling) but will also allow for unwanted solar heating. Heating can be countered using spray nozzles and fountains. The water sprayed in the air over the pond will reflect part of the sunlight and also provide shade for the pond. It also increases the available surface area to help in cooling (evaporation).
