i'm wondering how to get an avatar

Click "User CP" at the top of the screen. It's located under the "Articles" picture.
Then click on the "Edit Avatar" link on the left side of the screen. From there you can browse to a file on your hard drive or paste the link to an image you have hosted somewhere (such as ImageShack).
