I have caught Peacock Bass many places they are found (Brazil, Venezuela, Bolivia, Puerto Rico, Panama, Hawaii) but in my opinion the ones in South Florida are the best looking overall even though they don't get huge. As with Peacocks everywhere, there is a lot of variety in how they look and no two are the same. Here are a few I caught last week there:

They are nice looking and what was that about them not growing huge?

They are huge compared to what you see in aquariums, but a really, really big Peacock in South Florida is 7lbs and they really don't get over 10lbs. In the Amazon, they get up to 30lbs.
Right, what do you suppose is the reason for that?

Well, different species for one thing. The biggest ones are the Temensis, which they don't have in Florida. They mostly have Monoculus and various hybrids. The Amazon is a much bigger watershed with vast amounts of forage. Also, the growing conditions are probably not optimal in Florida because it gets much colder than they like in winter.

Interesting. Those points certainly make sense.I thought that most of the bass there were hybrids.
