Ive always used carbon in my filters and lately I met and talk to a bunch of people that dont even use or even think of ever wanting it anywhere near their filters ..
Carbon can be very useful... it can remove odor, stains in the water, medications, etc.
However, using carbon regularly is frowned upon in many circles and seen as unnecessary... Here's a good article on the pros and cons: http://www.ratemyfishtank.com/articles/106
Certainly, no matter what the hobbyist chooses, it is no replacement for good filtration and regular water changes.
I haven't used carbon in at least 8 years.
There is one good use for the chem basket in your filter,
and it's moar bio media. (I recomend Matrix)
