Very interesting, thanks for posting. Sounds like too much carbs led to fat deposition of the liver in their bass.

Fatty liver is the main cause of death of fish in zoos, and I think is something very serious to watch out for.

Thanks for posting, that is interesting.
I think this is definitely one possible cause in mystery deaths. The other is exposure to warm temps for a long period of time.

I've been posting about fatty liver disease longer than you have been alive. lol :)

Just recently posted the following ......

I've been saying this for the past 20 years, and many of those who work in the field of aquatics agree - one of the most common causes of death in captive fish is related to excessive fat deposits in and around the organs. Excess fat ends up stored in various tissues, specifically the liver. Over time this can lead to the degeneration of the liver, which is more commonly referred to as "Fatty Liver Disease". Years ago I read an article which included some info from a fish parasitologist at a Canadian University. He was involved with performing autopsies on dead fish at public aquaria and the single most common cause of death he's seen since he started to do the autopsies was "fatty liver disease". Ruth Francis Floyd from the U of Florida has stated the same.

How can this then be avoided? Heavily reduced feeding?

1. Don't overfeed. (which almost everyone does)
2. Don't feed diets high in crude fat. Even juvenile fish can develop liver deposits and disease from excessive amounts of fat. Under 10% crude fat for most life stages, but most certainly for all adult maintenance diets.
3. Limit fat/oil from terrestrial plant sources. Feed aquatic based plant matter, the vast majority of fish do not assimilate the oil from terrestrial plants very well. This is another subject that I have been harping about for many years.

I just bumped an old thread in this folder where a number of us were discussing this subject.

Also, I posted the following in the FH section a number of years ago.

"This study came about after some cichlid farms in south FL suffered from some large mortalities in both 1998 & 1999. When the dead fish were examined they showed fatty infiltration of the liver, heavy vacuolation, and severe necrosis of the liver, pancreas, and spleen."

Back in those days most farms fed low cost commercial trout chow to their cichlid ponds, without realizing the damage that they were doing with that high protein high fat diet.

The amended complaint by Veath has nine counts against Purina and Texas Farm Products (TFP).

Count 1 - Illinois Consumer Fraud Act Against Purina
Count 2 - Breach of Express Warrant Against Purina
Count 3 - Breach of Implied Warranty of Merchantability Against Purina
Count 4 - Beach of Implied Warranty of Fitness for a Particular Purpose Against Purina
Count 5 - Negligence Against Purina
Count 6 - Illinois Consumer Fraud Act Against TFP
Count 7 - Breach of Implied Warranty of Merchantability Against TFP
Count 8 - Breach of Implied Warranty of Fitness for a Particular Purpose Against TFP
Count 9 - Negligence Against TFP

Basically, all Purina and TFP have done so far is file motions to dismiss the various counts and have not responded to the complaint. The Judge entered an Order allowing Counts 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, and 9 to move forward and dismissing Counts 4 and 8 for Breach of Implied Warranty of Fitness for a Particular Purpose against both defendants as there is no specified "particular purpose" warranted by the food.

Now Purina and TFP will have to respond the Counts which haven't been dismissed yet, which they will probably do within 30 days.
