Thinking of importing some fish from Asia(China). What should I look out for?Do all imports have to be treated for parasites or other diseases?Anyone have any past experiences?Any info would be appreciated.

I work in a pet shop that imports a lot of fish from wholesalers on other continents.

Not all new fish need to be treated, and unless you have experience with that kind of fish from the same wholesaler it's a waste of time because new fish can be treated for gram positive, gram negative bacterial infections as well as various parasites and just being weak in general.

I would expect the fish to come in, in poor condition. Livebearers and goldfish are prone to both bacterial infections and parasites. I've noticed certain african fish tend to come in with undetectable conditions where they look and act fine for months and one day just die.

Will you be ordering the fish in bulk, or only a few of each species? Make sure you quarantine all fish and keep only one species in each tank. This way, one species doesn't pick at the other or out compete it for food. After 1-2 weeks the fish are usually good to be added to community aquariums with a very slim risk of disease.

I'd be super cautious. Sometimes we will lose entire boxes of angelfish upon arrival from Asia. Most of the time, we will lose nearly a quarter of them within a few days, some weeks we lose many more. Another big issue is, when dealing with bulk angelfish, discus or other SA cichlids you are chancing an outbreak of discus or angelfish disease, which is extremely contagious and easily transfers to other tanks from water changes and infects all fish in the tank. The disease is almost always fatal, and at many stores will wipe out most of their angelfish.

I wouldn't order angelfish from overseas because of the huge risk. I would definitely recommend finding breeders and buying angels from them instead since they are just about always healthier. However, if the angels you want, can only come out of Asia, just try to be as prepared as possible for possible outbreaks. As for the disease, I am unsure as to how to treat it. I do know that you would need to use a couple of different medications all together though.

Thanks Ind.on second thought,I think your right.Just thought I could buy a couple of hundred Angels cheap(except for the freight)in Asia and sell them here in the states for a profit.Just not worth it.Maybe I'll try breeding my own. There is a Angel supplier near you upstate called Angels Plus.I am from Long Island.Do you know anything about this supplier?
