So I was out scouting LFS today looking for driftwood, I haven't been able to find a great spot to collect some. Well of course I'm having no luck finding anything (the wife is trying to get me to buy Grecian urns, fake dinosaur skulls, bubble-blowing alligators - and no I'm not kidding). Saw some fish of course but nothing really grabbed me. Well I hit one and turns out the guy has some decent sized driftwood, got a nice ~3' piece, and also some nice cichlids. Now I've seen pics of chocolates before, and little ones in real life, but I'd never seen a big one live. Well there they were, around 8" or so, a bunch of them. Great looking fish, I had no idea. So I grabbed one. He's currently sorting things out with my uaru but I don't expect any problems. So I guess my tank is officially "mild-tempered SA cichlids & others" now...funny how that works. Does $40 for an adult male sound fair? I thought it was.

sounds about right i've only seen a few around here funny how alot of impule buy stories start with " i was out looking for drift wood when i saw "

Yeah that's true :)

Driftwood was all collected stuff and he kept it in big pools so it was already waterlogged and cured which was nice, saved me the work. And big fish which is a big deal, most of the LFS around have little fish or the occasional trade in/give back but that's more often than not either an oscar or a pacu.

Very fair price if they're as hard to come by as they are out here. Juvies (2" or so) sell for 12-20 bucks a pop in Cali, and you only see them for sale about once a year.

Yeah I rarely see juvies even, so I hadn't really considered them in my stocklist because I just assumed I'd never find one.

not the place for this but how often do you change your water?
also how big is the tank?

I hate when people try to make you buy really corny decorations!
eerrgghh happens everytime I go to the fishstore
