Have you guys with a tank knowing it is unable to house a particular fish for life ( although you know you would update your tank ) buy it when you see it at your LFS all of a sudden, seeing how awesome it looks, how it is your favourite, witnessing a kick ass specimen ( a juvenile ), hmm?

And then when you see another different fish, you just can't help but buy it too?:grinno:

What is your experience from such behaviour? Have you been able to live up to it perfectly or did you struggle a bit before reaching there as your fish is growing? Or did you just suck at it that you had to let the growing fish go?

I bought Oscars as they looked cool, 1" long this was when I first started getting into cichlids so I hadn't read much before jumping in (I never had a problem with guppys out growing their tank), 3 in a 30gal. That didn't last long so I upgraded to 55, I was told it would house them for life. I bought it (on impulse) went home and set it up and let it cycle for 1 week (bad info again) put the fish in and they grew and grew and grew. So I looked them up on the net, min tank size 55 for 1, woops. So I bought my 220, they only got to about 6" in the 55 so they had some room to move before ending up where they are now (which I still feel is to small for them the 2 Gts and the catfish so I'm getting a new tank).

i have. that's how i got my first poly.

it really is a bad idea though because plans change. one day you may be albe to pay fro that new tank and the next you may need that money to pay medical bills etc.

I havn't persay impulsed buyed yet! I always look at the aros in the LFS and I know I can't get it so I get some new gadget for the tank instead.

i tend to impulse buy alot. or i'll buy a fish that i know gets big, so i have to build a bigger tank. it's win win.

Ill buy a fish and if i find out it wont happen i sell it to someone.
Its a win win situation cause then i get money that i can go out and buy more fish with:D :D

I would buy a pike cichlid any time I saw them for a while. As it turns out they need big tanks and dont tolerate other pikes. Boys here in socal have aquired lots of free pikes from me. Its all good though.

My wife and I have a system worked out to prevent this sort of thing. We have a list or pre-researched fish that we know we can house in case we run into a really nice example at one of the LFS. Anything new has to be left until we go home and do a little digging around. Mind you we rarely ever FOLLOW the system but at least we do in fact have one...

I'm the king of impulse buys. It started with my first snakehead about 5 years ago and was followed up with RTC, TSN, Planiceps, Oscars, Pbass, etc.
