In need of general info on outdoor ponds

hi,i am in need of all info regarding how to build and set up an outdoor pond.Here's the get down me and my buddy want to fix up his dads pond for him as a gift but know nothing to do with ponds,the pump don't work hes always having to put water in it with the hose and really has nothing to exciting in it and it is real dirty probably due to the pond setup.So what we plan to do is pull out the existing pond and hook him up with a new tricked out one with some real nice fish that are some what easy to care for but not koi.Please help!what kind of pump?what kind of filter?any thing and everything.All info would be appreciated,thankyou
