I just got 6 of these guys in a trade. They are small, like less then half inch. I know the fish, like have researched it for my tanks. I knew I could have one so when the chance came up to get some, i dove right in. I am looking for general and specific info on this fish. Any experiences, anything. Mostly, what i wanna know is their growth rate, what size do they reach maturity, things to do, or things to avoid doing. Anybody with anything to add, please feel free. I would really appreciate it. Thanks

They are pretty much just like mbuna. They grow fairly quickly, breed readily and can be vicious towards each other.

Well, I don't agree with Pharoh on their growth rate (slower). Females are ready to breed at approx 1.5" at which they are at their reproductive peak.

There are 8 different variants (colection points) of the nyererei. The females all pretty much look the same no matter what variant. Max size for the male is approx 4". They are one of the most aggressive Victorians and are very aggressive towards females if you are trying to breed them. I would advocate a 4 to 1 ratio. Multible males will work as long as there are at least 3, two of which will become sub dominant but it is my experience that the SD males still exhibit nice color. They pretty much accept all foods but I feed my stock NLS and a spirulina flake.

They are a very hardy fish, probably an optimum temp is between 78-79 degrees and a pH north of 7.5

I know I have forgot something, PM or post specific questions on your thread.

Here's a shot of several nyereri I keep, all displaying color, the dominant male is not in the picture.

Here's the dominant male in the tank, I'll try to capture a shot of him when he is exhibiting his dominance, he lights up like a neon sign.

As to tank size, years of keeping them has me convinced that they prefer a tank of at least 5' in length. Aquascaping should include lots of rocks/caves. I pretty much think any substrate will work, I keep both pool sand and CC in my tanks.

WOW. Nice fish, they look great. Cant wait til my lil babies turn into something like that. The guy who traded me said he got a f1 pair from aquabid.com, some breeder. I seen the parents and they had awesome colours like yours. So, a mix of crushed coral and sand works best?? I have sand aragonite in one tank, and crushed coral in another. They have almost doubled in size since i got them, but they were small. I'd say about half inch, maybe closer to inch. Starting to see some aggression, but i expected that. Do you have yours in a species tank?? If not, some tankmates?? Thanks alot for the info.

Either one of the substrates you have will work fine, some people are against CC as your Vics are sifters and the belief is that the CC will cut the insides of their mouths. I've been using the CC with Vics for more than twenty yrs, never a problem.

Do you know of the 6 that you have, what the sexes are? If they are all male, you shouldn't have a problem. Very important to determine what you have.

As to tank mates, your PN's are aggressive for Victorians and will do fine most fish from the other two lakes. If you want just Vics as tankmates, then you could mix them with A. latifasciata, blue bars, crimson tides, or sp. 44's. Keep in mind, Vics will hybridize very easily so no female tank mates. I keep two "all male" Vic tanks.
