in tank heaters vs. inline heaters

Inline heaters won't get broken by fish, won't burn fish, and dont bring down the aesthetics of a tank.

I've got a 55g, i have the heater in the tank but its kind of unsightly.. and i get some temp. inconsistancys.. someone told me it would be better to run a inline heater on both of my canisters

In theory you put them on the return but an average canister is 2-3 gallons and move over 200gph so heating wise the difference is negligible. The biggest advantage to placing the heater on the return is that clean water is passing through the heater thus keeping the heater cleaner.

I agree with plumbing the online on the return side. It will keep the inside surface cleaner, therefore keep the efficiency of the heat transfer from the surface to the water.

Also, in regards to heat distribution within the water column, the inline has an advantage as it circulates the heated water better within the tank rather than unheated water passing over an in tank heater.
