im in the process of treating my tank. only lost one fish because treatment came too late but my parrot with it is doing fine. the only problem is i lost 2 of my electric yellows in the process of treating the ich. any reason why this could be? i dont want the others dying as well. maybe its because the tempt is too high? ive been doing daily water changes, using ich medication, temps raised up to 86 degrees and adding salt. it seems to get rid of the fish with ich but killing the healthy ones? ive been carrying this treatment for almost a week now tomorrow. any input on why my 2 africans died? is the tempt too high for them?

i think i might have found the reason why! i was told it was either, or, on treating the ich. salt and heated tank or medication, not a combination of all three! hopefully this is the reason... so i can stop killing my fish.

Rift lake cichlids have evolved in a very stable environment and extremes put them at edge of stress tolerance. Central Americans are much less sensitive because riverine environments are constantly changing. Just because you can't see the white spots doesn't mean the fish is uneffected by ich. Many times the paracites lodge in the gill membrane and are undetected.

don't worry I am in the same boat as you I got 2 oscars that have ich also just got to keep treating them and they should be improving soon if you have already treated for a week

The main thing when raising the temp and medicating is adding more oxygen, thats a big cause of fish loss during ich medications, and also once spots are on the fish, normally the gills are full of ich, white spots are almost the last part of the life cycle of ich, i'd try adding more o2 and see if that helps, good luck.

thanks a lot guys. that does explain why the africans arent holding up so well compared to the sa/ca. its been over a week and everyone seems to be fine. all very active and eating now. should i stop the treatment or continue?
