Hi people.. i am pretty new to the ray world.. i jus bought a pair of motoro rays 2 days ago.. the female seems to have settled down but the male is nt really mobile.. he seems to jus sit there all day.. i am kinda worried.. Any advice..?? both also haven not started eating yet..:nilly:

They're still fairly new to your tank, they're usually pretty chill in the beginning.

Have they started eating yet? I would also suggest keeping an eye on your water parameters, rays have a massive bio load. Adding two to a tank could put it into a mini cycle.

Parasites might also be an issue, but take things one step at a time. Make sure the water parameters are safe, then make sure they eat? Are there other tankmates that might be picking on them?

Try ghost shrimp too if you have to; try this at a last resort though because they have very little nutritional value.

Any ideas wat else i could try.. water parameters are good.. ph is 7.0-7.3 ammonia 0 nitrates 0 nitrites at 10ppm.. i have tried market prawns.. black worms.. and tonight bloodworms.. after the long trip i believed the have been starved abit and also the transfers from bag to bag.. the seem so skinny now.. :nilly::nilly:

Blackworms, Bloodworms and Ghost shrimp are usually the foods that rays will immediately take to once you get them. I'm unfamiliar with blackworms as I've never needed to use them before but are they large? If they are try cutting them into tiny pieces. You cut try cut up earthworms as a last resort also.

On another note, the rays are probably very stressed right now. Leave the tank lights off for a few days and possibly put a blanket over the tank to keep it dank and reduce stress. Did you properly acclimate them?

Yup.. I did the dripping to adjust the ph before finally letting them into the new tank two hours after they arrived home.. once they got into the tank.. the female was all good.. the male seemsed a little more stressed..:nilly: Blackworms are really tiny.. U can take a look at the link i attached.. :)

blackworms are about the same size as bloodworms, but something about them makes rays go nutty. improperly farmed blackworms have the chance of predatory leeches getting into the shipments. i'm not sure if this is a problem for the rays or not, but i was advised against using them so i stopped. at first i was concerned, but switched to earthworms and have never looked back.

blackworms are like 20$ a bag, that'll last you a couple days, maybe a week if you are stingy on feedings.

earthworms around here are like 2$ for 12-18. just fill a container with potting soil, get a bunch of earthworms, add in some produce and enjoy your own feeding colony for your rays. don't bother paying out the butt anymore.

... oh, and rays LOVE earthworms.

don't worry about the male right now, as hard as it is. he will get accustomed in a day or two. my female was fine and male was hidey and skittish big time too. he's better now, but still a bit of a fraidy cat.

Did you mix up the nitrates with the nitrites? Because you shouldn't have any nitrites if the tank is fully cycled. Also what temp is the tank at?

if these parameters are right then you need to do some massive water changes, nitrITES should not be detectable, are you sure it was nitrites at 10 and not nitrates?
