I've been pushing around an idea for increasing water capacity of my 200 gallon tank and incorporating a fresh drip water change system.

What I'm thinking about is adding a 200 gallon storage container behind the aquarium, making in essence my 200 gallon tank with 400 gallon aquarium capacity.

I'm a little confused on how to plumb this , I was hoping someone has done this already with out overflowing the tank?

Any ideas

How were you planning on getting tank water to your reservoir tank?
Wouldn’t this be set up just like a sump?
Were you going to filter debris out of the water going into the reservoir?
Some sort of circulation in the reservoir?
A float switch in the 200, controlling the reservoir pump would keep water off the floor.
Considering the amount of $$ spent against any gain, I`m not sure this would be a wise move.

If you add a fresh water drip change system why would you want to add a 200 gallon auxiliary tank? Adding an extra volume of water is a good way to dilute the Nitrogen compounds and other harmful substances to prolong the time needed between water changes. If you have a continuous water change system (An EXCELLENT way to go!) what advantage will the extra 200 gallons give you?

I would just use a conventional DIY sump and drill this sump for an overflow that goes to your lawn or drain. Then add a line to drip water directly into your 200g aquarium... The fresh drip water will displace dirty water which will overflow into the sump. Then from your sump the dirty water will overflow to your outdoor garden (or sewer :irked: )

You could even do away with the sump all together and have your 200g aquarium overflow directly to your garden.

My tank is below grade no way to drain water w/o incurring electrical cost. continuous drip system would put an extra load on well pump as well. trying to conserve water by making water changes less frequent. plus the 200 gallon tank is free.....
