Hello guys, so after a gap of a few years i am slowly moving back into the hobby, for now i have no fish or tanks. I decided to check out a few lakes and wells to see what i can catch and what's the the wild around me.

A local farmer showed me a simple bottle trap to get small fish and i found this water body which is really strange. (see pics) so this was a 8000 sq feet rectangular, 10 feet deep waterbody that has two massive wells at both ends that run way deeper into the ground. Anyways the water now somehow overflows the well and the entire tank which is now a lake/swamp.

Anyways i caught me ****load of minnows and endler guppies in a couple of scoops with a short net and the bottle traps were in for 3 hours and caught me these 3 fishes i cannot ID.

They look some sort of barbs or juveniles of some common fishes here, but as you can see in the pictures though all 3 are the same one of them has more of a pink/albino body. What are these?

The bottle traps are still there and i will be making a trip to them this evening again plus i have a few other idea on how to trap different fish in that pond and will be updating you guys with the catch. Please ID the ones i caught and if there is a easier way to build traps for bigger fish please do share.View attachment 1217569 15241745_1147958678645758_1696463787821270255_n.jpg 15267506_1147958701979089_271614041407492995_n.jpg 15284923_1147958455312447_4863743276220317525_n.jpg 15317889_1147958565312436_7992256174368325264_n.jpg 15317993_1147958255312467_3262660253144006250_n.jpg 15319154_1147958238645802_6567177960809329941_n.jpg 15338632_1147958281979131_3448744758912954290_n.jpg 15349747_1147958381979121_5324624118856546029_n.jpg 15350693_1147958371979122_4114497018866635792_n.jpg 15380487_1147958481979111_318070751316879640_n.jpg 15380665_1147960965312196_4263441304537437233_n.jpg 15400900_1147958355312457_174451274177311205_n.jpg View attachment 1217569 15241745_1147958678645758_1696463787821270255_n.jpg 15267506_1147958701979089_271614041407492995_n.jpg 15284923_1147958455312447_4863743276220317525_n.jpg 15317889_1147958565312436_7992256174368325264_n.jpg 15317993_1147958255312467_3262660253144006250_n.jpg 15319154_1147958238645802_6567177960809329941_n.jpg 15338632_1147958281979131_3448744758912954290_n.jpg 15349747_1147958381979121_5324624118856546029_n.jpg 15350693_1147958371979122_4114497018866635792_n.jpg 15380487_1147958481979111_318070751316879640_n.jpg 15380665_1147960965312196_4263441304537437233_n.jpg 15400900_1147958355312457_174451274177311205_n.jpg View attachment 1217569 15241745_1147958678645758_1696463787821270255_n.jpg 15267506_1147958701979089_271614041407492995_n.jpg View attachment 1217569 15241745_1147958678645758_1696463787821270255_n.jpg 15267506_1147958701979089_271614041407492995_n.jpg 15284923_1147958455312447_4863743276220317525_n.jpg 15317889_1147958565312436_7992256174368325264_n.jpg 15317993_1147958255312467_3262660253144006250_n.jpg 15319154_1147958238645802_6567177960809329941_n.jpg 15338632_1147958281979131_3448744758912954290_n.jpg 15349747_1147958381979121_5324624118856546029_n.jpg 15350693_1147958371979122_4114497018866635792_n.jpg 15380487_1147958481979111_318070751316879640_n.jpg 15380665_1147960965312196_4263441304537437233_n.jpg 15400900_1147958355312457_174451274177311205_n.jpg

The fish are obviously barbs, but I don't recognize the species,if u want to catch some bigger fish you should use a smallish barbless hook(handling or on a pole).

I do not want to use hooks at all because it does damage to the fish which i wouldnt mind if i were to eat it but i intend to keep them, that's why looking for traps.

And oh just went back there to add some meat into the trap to attract different kinds of fish and when i pulled my bottle up i had 8 more.

4 of them are definitely the same family as previous but the other 4 and bigger ones seem to be different, any ID?

Oddball Oddball ?

Can't really help but I wanted to say that is a beautiful looking spot to hang out and catch fish at

headbanger_jib headbanger_jib may have some input as well.

Sounds like fun, let us know what else you catch. Also Surprising micro fishing for them isnt all that hard on them, they heal surprising quick and Ive never seen an infection personally.

Keeping in mind I have ~ no idea what I am talking about, I'd say Puntius spp.

But I personally would ask Shovelnose on Planet Catfish - he is a hobbyist but studies Indian native fish as diligently as I have ever seen, including barbs. Everything.

headbanger_jib headbanger_jib Jibran would probably know too. IIRC, he knows Shovelnose (Balaji) personally as well.

I remember headbanger and oddball from the days i used to have the channas and arows, the forum seems to have slowed down a bit :D

So i left the traps overnight again, but this time in an attempt to catch something new i was experimenting with the food or bait i put in there. It was bread crumbs only previously so in order to attract catfish or others i decided to mix it up. I put in chunks of chicken stomach into the traps and this afternoon i pulled up the bottle to find no barbs but 3 inch fat fry of the other species i caught yesterday. Surprisingly i also caught some crabs, but i let them go after photographing a little guy. I will head back to the spot in a couple of hours and check it out but if i get more of the same i will just let them go instead of taking them home, running out of room.

I might keep netting the guppies though, the lake is overunning with them and also i am planning on a small scale emperimental DIY catfish tank/farm to raise them as food (on my terrace :P) so the guppies might be good live food for them.

Pictures in the next post, giving me some error and i am unable to upload them here.

I think we have a winner, that looks very close to what i caught, but then again i went to a LFS yesterday and they had like 6 types of barbs all looking like mines but a little different. I took some pics and will post it in the next post. Hopefully jibran and balaji get those mentions.

Well, weather wise it is awesome this time of the year, plus this is right in the middle of a botanical garden, a fruit farm and greenhouses, so while we are fishing or on our way we have to avoid peacocks and a bit of wildlife, mostly the one that flies. And the fishing spot is like 2 miles from my home, its a large patch of forest surrounded by the city.

Will keep you updated, but here's a thing. This spot is filled with amateurs with a wooden stick a thread tied to a fishing hook and they injure more fish than they catch, because of the 10 3 inch fry i have caught 3 already had a cleft lip which was caused by the hook, and then in a day they developed a kinda clot near the lip and this morning all three died. Also because i am slowly treating them with salt so maybe they couldnt handle the qurantine.
