My dats are pretty stable eating pellets swimming freely only darken up for about an hour or so when the lights come on. My question is occasionally they will go to the corner and face straight down like a head stand and stay that way for long periods of time. What is that about?

mine does it near one of the fx5 intakes. very strange, if i nudge him he snaps out of it and continues to swim around then eventually goes back there. first time i saw this i thought they were dying

It means they are scared. When they become vertical, they look taller on an attempt to scare off other fish.

But if they're never being chased why would they feel scared. I have zero aggression between them.

I have zero aggression issues in my tank unless its when I go to sleep. Will keep an eye out tho. But wouldn't he be stressed and turn completely black when in the corner? Mine maintain their dark stripes and golden color when vertical

My 2 dats also do this. Since dats are related to the Perch fish and itself a type of perch fish. I think it's a hunting or relaxing stance for them to conserve energy? But when it's feeding time and they see the bowl... they snap out of it and comes to the front of the tank.

Theres a datnoid documentary somewhere on youtube. It says it goes in vertical position when it feels scare or in fear so the body looks Bigger when it goes to vertical position
