Okay the smell seems to be whatever I have feed the fish that day. So how do I stop this? Less food? smaller yet more frequent feedings?

Activated carbon hasn't helped. Forgot to mention that.

NLS primarily and about once a month shrimp or deshelled clams, or trimmed and diced chicken liver, and peas.

Are you doing regular/large enough water changes? Has anything happened that could have killed the bio filter? Any dead fish in the tank or fry in the filter. Lots of uneaten food?

Food gets eaten, bio filter keeps ammonia and nitrite at 0ppm and nitrate at 40ppm. 40% water changes once per week. no dead or dying anything.

Even, if a catfish barfs up its food the other fish eat it.

Would more mechanical filtration help? I am sure I have enough mechanical , But ?

I would take a look at your mechanical filtration, maybe it needs to be cleaned more.
odors are usually partially from ammonia levels which is why i'm surprised. are you using any medications or additives to your water?

Only additive is prime during water changes and mechanical gets cleaned with hot water and fully rinsed once a week.

I will test my water again tomorrow to make sure.

What kind of bio filter r u using. When I was using a plastic drawer setup on the onld pond it smelt horrible so I built another filter

It is Diy, but the bio medium is 5 gallons of seachem matrix, mechanical is open cell foam and those micron filter felts, similar to sump socks.
