hello,

I have a 200 gallon preformed pond in my basement, i have had it set up for well over a year now....its planted with different plants and moss and grasses...for over 6-mos i was getting now plant growth...i am using a t-5 fixture for lighting and have sand/gravel mix for substrate....currently there is a mated pair of red swords in there with maybe 50-plus australian rainbows and one small PIKE 3" for population control on youngins....its filtered ONLY by a powerhead sponge. I never have amonia problems, i do weekly water changes. NOW THE PROBLEM. i wanted better plant growth, i looked into DIY c02 using 1-gallon container...what a HUGE difference...after 2-weeks of C02 my plants are now growing so fast i have to trim every week. SINCE using C02 i now have a problem with an oily film on the surface.....i use a milk jug to skim the ponds surface BUT now it comes back in 2-days.....why is this happening? and what are some suggestions to correct this?

What's the feed rate?

How is it (co2) delivered?

Could any of the mix from the DIY co2 get in the pond?

Could also be a bio-film developing because of the co2.

Remove the co2 for a week and see if it goes away on it's own. Then reinstall co2 and start off slow.

Float a couple of tennis balls (they make '$pecial' ones for hot tubs) in the pond, the film will collect on the and just clean them accordingly.

I feed every other day, mix between tropical flakes...blood worms...and beef heart, sometimes live crickets, knats and insects....
My C02 is set up with a "collection" cup between the gallon (milk) and the pond....i have no check valve which is why i did that...i am almost 100% that it is not leaking. My transfer set up goes like...tube is fastned to the side to the bottom in flow....a small inverted glass bowl sits over the opening...a "Curled" rock sits over that (made the rock by pouring concrete over a wooden log) then where the "bubbles" come out from the glass bowl travels up and hits the underneath the rock....builds up and where it escapes from there i have another (same) inverted bowl to catch it.....i have a rock on top to avoid the gas from tipping over the bowl. I know i am getting awesome absorption because of how the growth of my plants are reacting...also if i move my gravel i am getting gas exchange.....

Can i get these "special Tennis Balls" be found at pool supply store>? I will try taking my C02 off line and see what happens.....

appreciate you responding...

I meant co2 feed rate :ROFL:.

You should be able to find them at pool/spa stores, but they're really just tennis balls :D.

Check the price...

ok, feeling silly :screwy::grinno:

have no clue:confused: my mix is 4 cups sugar, two teaspoons yeast...lasts 14-days rooughly...how can i tell that? i can tell you that both cups are filled to brim...and every 50 or so seconds some goes in and a big one comes out.
