I am planning on getting some tub ponds for breeding fish, but indoor. I know there's more benefits to them being outside but with the weather over here they'd boil or freeze, or die with the temperature swings. So I got the idea to just get tub ponds for indoor breeding because they're cheaper than tanks and are usually more space for what they're worth. I was thinking for one of my first breeding projects I'd do a colony of cynotilapia zebroides cobwe. Just to make sure, they're not going to go flying out of it are they? I've never really had problems with fish jumping in normal circumstances, but should I have any countermeasures just in case?

Wouldn’t hurt to have a net I’ve rebut I agree mbunas don’t really jump. Mine would splash when feeding though.

If you have the space to do something inside Use IBC totes and leave the top 18”-2’ empty- or full of air instead of water so to speak. They’re square so they are way more modular and Waste a lot less space plus you can put a 4 foot tank on top of one. 75 gallon tanks are almost like 55s on Facebook and Craigslist- 4 of them and 4 IBCs would be a pretty serious little African hatchery on a 8x8 foot print. Probably 2x more money than you’re talking about tho- not really an issue as it can be phased in incrementally. This is the direction the east bay of my carport is going.

I have lost a few Mbuna over the years to jumping. Doesn’t happen often but I always thought that the causality was probably being chased.

My female labidochromis sp hongi is a jumper. I'd take precautions just in case. Some mbunas are really aggressive and can harass the female and she can jump out if there is nowhere to run.
