Ottawa, Canada
Hello to all:

I'm a newbie to MonsterFishKeeper. I live in the bitterly cold Ottawa, Canada climate and this winter lost most of my backyard pool Koi. Consequently, now want to try overwintering them inside in the basement next winter.

I'm considering a 300 gallon Rubbermaid container. I would appreciate hearing from anyone who might have some experience with this type of "indoor" pond, or other alternatives.

I am an experience tropical fish fancier (60 years!) and currently have two 90 gallon aquariums. I kept one baby Koi over this winter in my S. American tank (the other holds Africans) and it grew 5" in five months! However, no room left in these tanks for my pond Koi.

this is fine dude. some people on here keep rays in those tanks. there easy to use. filter it with well you know your filtration. they will be fine

i live in upstate ny... right across the lake from you.. every fall/ winter we bring in our 20 goldfish {been doing it 8 years now} from outside pond into basement into rubbermaid 300gal pond .. we just add the filter and nice light over head and bring in the lilys too... will be bring everyone back out soon.... into the 300gal summer pond in the ground..we tried all the floating de-Icer products etc.. they could never be trusted.. this is easy 1 2 3 method.... i will get some pics for you if you like...

Dang RD... Never realized you were so close

The 300G Rubbermaid is the tride and true method which has been used for years by alot of Pond owners up here in the Cold... the average Pond up here (in the city anyway) is only 2' deep or less (by laws typically start treating deeper ponds as Pools which means that your subject to a ton of other regulations including fencing and permits ect) which in our region... would freeze solid some years or break the bank tryin to keep them from doing so.

You might also look into just building yourself a pond in the basement... they can look alittle more "appealing"

Run it year round....

But this is Chicago cold, not Canada cold....

how big of a space can you put it in?
i would buy a big plastic pool. A 1000gallon pool is about 150. also when summer rolls around you can pack it up for the summer

My apologies to you all for not replying to your helpful notes. I've been out of commission for a while. Anyhow, many thanks for your suggestions.

Muske: A large inflatable kids pool might be the answer since on second thought getting a 300 gallon Rubbermaid into my basement may prove impossible (or I could buy two 150 gallon Rubbermaids instead). My only concern would be that the pool plastics might contaminate the water.

I have three 10" Koi and seven 4-6" Koi/Goldfish to overwinter so feel I need at least 300 gallons...could put a couple of the Goldfish in my 100 gallon tropical fish aquarium.

The 1 and Only: Seems our frigid winter temperatures are similar.

Red Devil: Would love to see your photos
