Indos...have to be in odd numbers??

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
who told you this? plenty of people have just 1 dat and dont have any problems. its just when they are young they are shy... give him time and it will come out more often. having more than 1 will equal to small little fights and chases, but nothing ive seen that would be deadly.

I think that rumor is crap.

Is this true? Is keeping 2 indos in a tank a bad idea? Would one by itself be timid and end up hiding? thanks
There are other odd numbers than 2......

Keeping just 2 could lead to one dominant fish picking on the other, although a LFS here has a huge tank with two good sized IT's and they seem fine together.
As for keeping 4,6,8 etc, I can't see why it would be any different to 3,5, or 7 dats.

I've got one 8" IT with other fish and its fine.

i kept 4....
1 bigger one in 5ft tank wth other big fishess,
yet another 3 smaller one in my 3 ft tank, they live well, jst sometimes, little fight, little chase.

i got about 25-30 small datz in a 40long they are doing fine. they all like to cruise in the front of the tank and look at me waiting for food

i was keeping 2 little indos around 2'' in a 106g and one kept the other pinned behind the filter intake.
the feisty one also grew a lot quicker.
they may not do a lot of damage but it would be the stress that can take them out.
keeping 2 at totally different sizes may make a difference though.

2 indos, or almost any number should be fine space permitting. if there is aggression ive found breaking up the tank into areas helps. but bickering is common in dats especially small ones. if it really gets to be a problem between 2 indos, you could add a few more, or what ive done in the past is add an AT of similar sise. he will likely establish him self as the alpha fish and the indos should bicker less. The AT's aggression should be dispersed among the indos almost equally. this has worked for me, but again every fish is different. Just keep a close eye on them and good luck!
