Are there any secrets to help induce a pair of red terrors to spawn? I think I have a pair (maybe they're still "dating" I don't know) but they haven't spawned yet. Would more frequent water changes, more feedings, higher/lower temperature help? Or do I just need to be patient?

Hi. Patience is the greatest virtue a hobbyist can have. Use good quality feed but do not overfeed. Live food like mosquito larvae, earthworms or even feeder fish will help.
The trick is to try to simulate natural climatic conditions of the breeding season. Partial water change and a small drop in temperature would be like rainfall in the tropical forest.

The presumption is, of course, that your fish are sexually mature and that all other parameters are okay. Good luck.

Thanks for the info. Patience is probably the key. They just seem so close to finally spawn. It almost seems like a gentle nudge in the right direction would seal the deal.

Next week I'm going to change things up a bit - do small water changes every day, lower the temperature a bit, and increase the amount of protein a little.

By the way, the temp drop should only be about 2-3 degrees C. If your present temp is cool (below 28 C), you can first raise it a bit and bring it back down after a couple of weeks. Good luck.

if they are not in breeding condition now, if they don't lay in the next week or so, condition them. raise the temp to 82-84f, big(>20%) water change every couple of days, and feed them alot of good stuff. like freeze dried shrimp, earthworms, feeders, black worms, and high quality pellets like cichlid gold. once you've noticed a weight gain, 2-3 weeks probably, they should have leyed eggs by now. for the most part, most cichlids have been shown to breed when they have the opportunity, clean water, 80 degrees, lots of good food, king and queen of the tank, they should breed.
those are really the points you should focus on.
be ready to seperate the female, if she is not ready and the male is, always, he may beat her to death. another tank or a well secured divider should work.
good luck.

Patience my friend. Like everyone said so far ... water changes and good quality food.
