So we all know that we can get 50-60lb bags of sand from home depot for relatively cheap ($5 or so)... but how about BLACK sand??

I have a 125gallon Im considering re-doing in BLACK sand... but the only black sand ive ever used is made by an aquarium company and costs $15 per 25lbs.... it would be rather expensive for me to do an entire 125gallon...

so where is some black sand readily available for cheap???

Black sand? never heard of that.

I paid $21 for a 50 pound bag of black T Grade 3M Colorquartz. One 50 pound bag gave me 3" of coverage in my 55 gallon. I imagine it wouldn't take more than two bags to give decent coverage in your 125.

he is right! i have the same thing and im glad i listened to him and saw his pics. you wont be sorry. i did mine in black using 2- 50lb bags. its great stuff!

Pool supply stores. Like the ones that supply pool builders. They will probably say they will not sell to you, but just tell them you need just a few bags, they will sell them. I paid $17.80 per 50lbs. bag. 180g tank took 4 bags for like 3" coverage. Also heavier than sand so cleaning is simple. I ended up buying [SIZE=-1]3M Colorquartz Grade "S" Fine Black Sand. Love it.

Two bags will do just fine. I put two in my 110 and I have 2.5 to 3" it looks great.

3M will mail you samples of the different colors and grades of sand that they provide. They come in neat little test tubes and this let me mix and match different ratios of actual sand to see what I wanted. I ended up doing a mix of 7 parts black, 1 part white, 1 part grey. The stuff is excellent, but a real pain to clean before it is first put in the tank - of course my tank was 8' by 3' so I needed a lot of sand.

I purchased mine in Denver at the Rio Grande construction material supply depot.

Good luck, you won't be disappointed if you decide to go with the Colorquartz.
