Hi, ive just signed in here, and ive read some posts where the Channa Orientalis i discussed, and i can see that all are saying that it will get up to about 15 cm long, but i have a book where there stands that it will get up to 30 cm long, so now im confused. and what about the aquarium, should it be with dark light? ive heard that it should be dark light.

Hi......

I have not as much time today........so just a short answer!

Channa orientalis was often misidentified with Channa gachua (looks nealry the same but with pelvic fins.........orientalis has got not pelvic fins)

Some of the gachua Varities can reach a size of more than 25cm...........

Also gachua was misidentified with Channa stewartii in the past ,too!
And stewartii can reach a size of 30-35cm....

And because of this misidentification there is the problem with the sizes in literature!

Most of the books are old now........and nealy nothing has changed in the newer ones!

So there is still this stupid thing with the maximum size of 30 cm (in some books 35cm)

But I can say for sure:
Orientalis will only get a size of about 15-maximum 18cm length!

You can keep a couple in a tank of 1m length x 40 xm depth x 40 cm high

Mostly all snakeheads prefer dim light............it make them feel safe!

Also orientalis likes softer water with a ph around 6!

Channa orientalis is endemic to Sri Lanka (Ceylon) only............and it is endeangered there because of bringin chemicals into the water!

But I will tell more in the Snakehead keeping condition Thread........so watch out!

But it can take a little while until I start the discription of Ch. orientalis!

Cheers Pascal
