Ive found documents that people had done with GSP and FEP (figure 8) that they didn't need brackish waters for a long life. It does help the fish but its been done with out brackish set up. Hmm the tail thing might be a problem with the betta. Or you can get a small GSP and once the tank is cleared of most of the snails... return him or put it up for sale.

Ive had good luck with wafers if u dont mind spending the money, if your fish don't eat it down.

i didnt want to break down the tank yet. so, i got a figure 8 puffer. and as soon as i put it in the tank he started feeding. and i mean seriously going at the snails. he just about got every snail i could see. and he wasnt nice about it. he sucked the shell and all into his mouth. sometimes spitting out the empty shell, other times, i think he just swallowed it. the loaches were following him and trying to learn i think. lol. or maybe they just wanted scraps. thanks for all the help.
