Ive had three Buffalos.. All have died. I love the breed cause of the looks, attitude, color etc..

They have an attitude for sure. Not one to worry about them killing or even tearing up the other tank mates. But one that they jump out of their home/enclosure and like "yell" at whomever is cruising by. Its kinda funny.

They usually can hold their own against others of the same size, they need a nice re-treat or hiding spot for themselves and only themselves. Great eaters with whatever you normally feed. And if im not mistaken they get about 6-7" total length. Big ol bump on the head too! Actaully resembles a buffalo.

Get one! If my LPS gets another one I'll try it again. I got rid of my aggressor.

P.S. Keep an eye on the Johanni... Can be little jerks.

my johanni is actually very calm he tends to think hes a yellow lab. i bought 2 and brought one back as he took over the whole tank. ive heard good things about the buffalos but never about what species you can mix them with. myabe you also know about getting a pr together or is it possible to just get 2 or 3 not knowing if there a couple

I've never tried to pair them together before. So I have no idea what their like as a couple. Id suspect them to fight between eachother for territory.

They like to have their own space.

But try one. They would easily work with Yellow Labs! You'll like one for sure.

yes the will go together but have hiding places the yellow labs and johannis get mean when older but buffalo heads will stand there ground and if you need some let me know i have some babies right now about 5/8 to 3/4 inch :headbang2

Once they pair remove all others. They will not allow other near fry. Also if one parent lacks in taking care of the fry, the other will kill them. Once they pair, they will hardly expect a new partner. The parents will care for the fry until a new batch is free swimming. If they do not breed again, they will tolerate the other fry for a while.

as for getting along in the tank, they should have no problem, I find them to be good at defending themselves against larger non-piscivore cichlids. However, the concern is for tankmates as mike said, in the event of them pairing up
