I am not familiar with ehiem media. So how important is it to replace mech and subtrat? I have always rinsed and reused with my xp3 but this media is not plastics. This media is rather spendy too not that that's a bad thing. You get what you pay for. I always rinse and reuse coarse filter pads and never changed them as I do with all coarse pads and bio. I don't like tossing out good bacteria in a filter. Or am I wrong on this? Micro pads I will toss after 2 months. I did notice that the mech pro is plastics. Will that do as good of a job. I do like that you can reuse plastics but it don't mean they are messisaraly better.

I usually shoot for 7x gph on canisters but these filters move less water with way more media than xp3's so I'm assuming that I should be OK being at only 5x gph?

I am going to try to rebuild one of my xp3's. Thinking it's seals and hose disconnect leaking. If I can I will run that too with no baskets to allow more media and will consist of bio and movable bio with very little pad.

I've had mine around 5 years and have the original ceramics which I will never replace. I replace the coarse pad once or twice a year, it will shrink over time and not fit as snug against the housing. Polishing pads are replaced ever time I open it, recently switched over to bonded pads which I cut to size.

thats kind of my thoughts on it to. I might chang out some of the substrat here and there to provide new surface for new growth on unpluged ceramic. Just wasnt sure if ceramics where treated the same as plastics.

My 2260 (upgraded to 2262) have the same original filter medias. I have my 2217 when I started the hobby which was 10 so plus yrs. last night I set it back up for quarantine. On and off I uses it.
