Hello am thinking of getting a group of these animals.would someone tell me the personalities they have experienced are they Midas like in behavior or more synspillium where they need tank mates to come around and can be skittish?
Depends on the individual to a degree but generally like synspilum but more aggressive in my experience.
A lot will depend on tank size but they become aggressive with their own kind.
If you have a large tank you could raise a group until they start to pair up. After that expect a lot of fighting.
Beautiful fish though and we'll worth the effort.
I agree with Stanzzzz7, mine were generally much more aggressive than say melanurum (synspillum) but not in a category with argentea.
Beautiful red/purple colors at maturity (especially when spawning).
When they did spawn, they killed everything in a 150 gal I couldn't get out fast enough. So I'd venture to say, you'd be safe if you kept a pair in a 6 ft tank with some fast non-cichlid dithers, probably no other cichlids when mature.
