i am getting an electric eel, how will it live with a red tail cat thats around 16" (eel will be around 18") ?? also would like information from anyone who has kept this species as i have only read general caresheets on them, starter tank is a 180gallon i have been saving for a large tank for a while will probs spend about 5000 on new tank.

The RTC won't live long with an EE. Most EE tanks that I've seen (very few) are usually kept alone since they will probably shock any tankmate that messes with it (and knowing an RTC's appetite...it will mess with it). Since these guys can grow anywhere from 6'-8' and weight up to an average of 45lbs, $5000 is probably going to cover half your cost to suffiently care for these Monsters. Good luck with it:thumbsup:

could put more towards the tank, was planning to build though as i work building for a concervatory company and i know good glass makers who work with acrylic also, would 5000 go far in building the tank/pond. so you think the eel will kill the red tail, what could live with it or is it a specimen. would you keep the eel or red tail as the only fish??

I came across this thread.

If you can build it yourself, then $5000 can be stretched pretty good. I've never built a tank before...not crafty enough. I've built an above ground pond. With a pond, you can only get a top view (and with an EE all you're going to see is this ~ all the time).

And personally...I'd take the RTC over the EE. EE's are one of those fish best left to the experts (scientists and nature;)) Even though an RTC averages about 4' and really girthy, it would be safer than an EE.

Keep in mind these can put out 600 volts, which means any fish living with it and the fishkeeper with his hand in the tank are at a serious risk.
