so cal
an lfs near my house has a freshwater dolphin. anybody seen these before? the guy said they get to be around 4feet long. i havent been able to find any good info

i think you maybe missinformed. either by common name or some other fact of this fish. but heck i dont know everything.

What's known as Freshwater Dolphins are a mormyrid (aka elephantfish) that pops up sometimes. Try 17" to as their biggest size (maybe a bit bigger). There are Mormyrids that get to be 5'+... but most aren't found for sale.

Just google it. All are still wild caught and imported from the Nile region... which is why they are usually more expensive.

Aren't the species of freshwater dolphins basically endangered of extinct.

You're thinking of Inia Geoffrensis (aka buofo) that is found in the Amazon River Basin, and you are correct about it being endangered. The FW dolphin he's talking about is a misnomer, completely different fish.

There are 3 or 4 species of freshwater dolphin, most of which are found in Asia, all of which are endangered and I believe there were more that are now extinct. None of these species would, or should anyways, be found in a pet store.
