1)Anyone here frm Malaysia know where to get spotted/florida gar in Kuala Lumpur area ?

2)Can a Gator gar ( about 5 inches) be grown and kept with an 18 inch arowana without the Gar growing faster than the aro and making it a quick snack :/ ? Any tips/suggestion are greatly valued :naughty:
* btw the arowana is currently in a 4 ' x 2' x 1.5 ' tank which I knw is small but Im getting a larger 6 ' x 2.5 x 2 tank in the near future 8D .(I knw a gator gar needs more place but im just asking this question for reference sake and I might jst raise one and when the time comes pass it on to my close friend whos dad is contructing a monster fish pond ) But will the gar be able to live happily in a 6 footer for about a year or two ?

Hi,

(I am sure the experts will give the exact information. I am just listing my personal experience.)

Whether the 5" Gators survive with your 18" Aro depend on several factors:

1. What kind of Arowana are you talking about? (Silver, Jardini, Asian, other?).
- If you have a Jardini, there is very little chance of anything smaller than the Aro will survive the tank. I have kept a 5" Gator with a 16" Silver Aro and they are OK. The Gators are close to 8-9" now and the Silver Aro is close to 18". I don't have information about Asian Arowana's temperament.)

2. What is the diet of the Arowana? (Live food (feeders), shrimps/prawns/sea-food, pellets)
- If the Arowana is on a diet of feeders and hence of the habit of attacking smaller fish for food, the 5" Gators will have little chance of surviving. If the Arowana is docile and on pellets and well-fed, the chances of him attacking the Gator Gars are relatively less. My Silver Aro at 12"-14" lived peacefully with Pearl Gouramis.

3. What is the diet of the Gator Gar? (Live food (feeders), shrimps/prawns/sea-food, pellets)
- If the Gator gars are on feeders (which is most probably the case), you will have trouble feeding them in the same tank as the Arowana. All feeders will be eaten by the Arowana. Or worse, the Aro will attack the Gars in competition for food. I moved my Gator Gars to the (mini) Monster Tank after they started accepting seafood (shrimps etc) which is the staple for my Monsters. (Silver Aro and FL Gars)

A few other points:

Growth Rate for Gator Gars: About 2-3 inches per month which, I presume, continues till they reach about 18 inches (depending on diet and tank parameters).

As I mentioned above, this is just my personal experience and what I have read on this forum and other sites.

We are lucky to have some real scientists on this forum will be give you accurate information.

Good luck,
Sid

A gator gar will outgrow your 18" silver eventually, but it'll still have to depend on the size of the tank you're keeping it in. However, even if it does outgrow your silver, I doubt it'll eat your silver aro so rest assured:) BTW, which part of Malaysia do you reside in? You can find them commonly in Johor.

Kuala Lumpur :)

i currently have my 20" gator gar with smaller fish like my 12" jar and 12" lap bichir. so far, so good! been in the same tank for over 2 months. i feed him 1 or 2 big chunks of tilapia and/or octopus day one, dried shrimp/ massivore day two, and off day three.

You can get Florida Gars here in KL, but never seen Gator Gars.
I've seen them sell Floridas at Mid Valley, but no where else.
