i've been looking into geo. altifrons and thinking of putting a pair in a 55g with a pair of Sevs. im been looking into how big these guys get or any other information on them. would this tank setup be good for a 55g tank with some wood, rocks, and a few plants

Altifrons grow to around 11"-12" but you will rarely see them at this size... usually around 7"-9" is common.

If your buying juviniles, buy 3+ not 2.

If you buying a proven breeding pair the sevs will get bashed every month or so.

In my experience, surinamensis type geos are pretty aggressive towards their own kind but tend to leave other fish alone. Even though they don't have the equipment to do much damage the dominant fish do a pretty good job of beating up the others. I had a group of 6 in a 120 that eventually had to be cut down to just a pair because of fighting.

In a 55 I think your best bet would be to house just a single altifrons. Alternatively, start with a larger group of juveniles and eventually trim it down to the pair that you want.

im not planning on breeding or anything but if i just happen to get a pair would they get pushy with the sevs?

would a different species of geo be better for a 55g or would a altifrons be ok. would another fish make a better tank make besides sevs?

Surinamensis are extremely rare to the hobby, i would say they were either Dicrozoster or Abalios.

What are the dimensions of a 55? if you have a pair they will chase and nip anything within about a 2ft radius.

My silver dollars, oscar, pleco's and other geo's usually know to stay away.

Mate, if you can pick up 6 geophagus 'Rio Tapajos Orange Head'... they grow to around 6 inchs and breed at around 4 inches i think.

Beautiful fish!

Geo steindachneri- red hump eartheater is rather common, stays pretty small (+ or - 5") and is not very aggressive.

the 55g is a standard 55, 48x12.5x21

most of my LFS always have Jurupari

You are correct. This is why I said "surinamensis type". The taxonomy of geos is such a mess that they are frequently called surinamensis incorrectly (at least in the US). Mine were in fact abalios and were originally sold as "Geophagus surinamensis sp. abalios" by the breeder.

HiImSean: If jurupari (more likely leucosticta) are easily available to you I'd suggest you go with those. In my experience the Satanoperca tend to be more mellow than geos. They also grow more slowly, which would work better for you 55.
