Hi all

Been registered on the site for a good while but here goes first post..!

I've recently set up a 5x2x2 (about 450 litres) and current stock is 7 juvie Jags - all between 2-3.5" so not really been able to sex them accurately yet - hopefully not too much longer until I can tell!!

My plan was to try and get a breeding pair from the 7. That's still plan 1 - but I'm not too sure what I will do with all of the fry as I don't have a spare tank...

My second plan, and one which I'm not too sure will work, is to only keep one of the Jags once grown, and then maybe something like a pair of Convicts and maybe a plec (or royal panaque)?

What do you guys think - if I can't take care of the fry, is it worth trying to get the pair? Or is the other stocking proposal too risky?

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts.

Out of the 7 you will most probably have a couple. A couple of jags is impressive under any light you want to look at it.

Once the pair is formed, slowly get rid of the others...

You will enjooy them breeding and taking care of the fry.

And do not worry. They will eat the fry once they are ready to spawn again. Or you can take them away and sell them or give them away.

I do a lot of breeding and also do not specially care for the fry. Have no grow out tanks. Only big fish.

Thanks Miguel - do you keep anything with a breeding pair? If they "take care" of the excess fry themselves, then I would love a pair. I just thought that maybe some kind of plec might get to the eggs before they can even hatch.

Livebearerfreak - thanks for the input, but Texas and Firemouths are'nt really only my wanted list...

I am not savvy with plecos....

In any case, if they are a good pair, and good parents, the pleco will have no chance.

In a 450 litre tank you could perhaps keep the pair with a couple of armoured catfish, such as Raphaels...

Any other cichlid will not work, considering its not that big a set up.

I have to admit...I'm not that bothered about having a pleco - or any other tank mates.

My biggest worry is that if (and probably when) they start to breed, then I won't have anything to do with the fry. But if you think they would manage that themselves then I'm less worried.

I prefer understocked tanks, so would be more than happy with just the jag pair in there.

I once had a 90g tank with Jags and Convicts. Everything was great for the first year. Then two of the Jags paired up. When they started breeding, they would not tolerate anything else in the aquarium with them except for a pleco. With 7, you should have no problem getting a pair. Just be prepared to remove the others once this happens.

Thanks for the responses all. I'm going to stick with plan #1 and hope to get a pair form.

Separately though, is it normal for some to show very little colour at this age? The largest, who I think is a male, is probably the most drab of the lot and rarely shows any spots / stripes - most of the time is beigey/bronze. All seem to go through "colourless" phases but he seems to be that way most of the time.
