I'm interested in buying some from TUIC but i dont know what is the difference between these two? I cant really differentiate them.. can someone help?

The short answer: S. leucosticta have heavily spotted cheeks and S. jurupari do not have spots. There is quite a lot of gray area in-between, and it is sometimes difficult to distinguish young fish. HTH,

There are dozens of pictures in the profiles section of cichlid forum.

I have two leucosticta that are about 5" as well as one jurupari that is about 3". The problem with this all is that I'm only about 80% sure of which they area, and have no clue whatsoever what sex they are. This makes getting a friend for the 3" guy kind of hard. And I can't know for sure which sex or species they are without seeing them breed - if you can watch them breed, it's easy to know for sure, as the differences in breeding behavior there override any visual evidence one way or the other.

I will say that all the Jurupari I've ever seen in stores were actually leucosticta. And my pair of Leucosticta are completely inseparable. I've never had fish that size that are so attached to each other. My monogamous pairs of other eartheaters still wander around alone most of the time, but these two move as one, even when being chased by the male orangehead. It's pretty funny.
